UN Chief calls on States to stop using inhumane weapons

12/11/2009
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday called on all States that have not acceded to the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) to do so.

In a message delivered by Sergio Duarte, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, he commended the 110 signatories to the agreement.

The CCW, also called the Inhumane Weapons Convention, aims to ban or restrict the use of weapons that cause unnecessary or unjustifiable suffering to combatants or to affect civilians indiscriminately.

Duarte says the Secretary-General is encouraged by the increased participation of developing countries affected by mines and explosive remnants of war.

The Secretary General's message concluded with an invitation to States to begin ratifying treaties like the Mine Ban Convention, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the new Convention on Cluster Munitions expected to enter into force next year.
