Briefing reporters in New York, Janos Pasztor, Director of the Climate Change Support Team, says Mr. Ban Ki-moon made this announcement on Monday ahead of his trip to Washington D.C.
"The Secretary-General is confident that governments will reach agreement in Copenhagen on the fundamental issues that will form the substance of a legally binding international agreement which is the end goal for guiding action on climate change."
Mr. Ban will be traveling to D.C. to meet with senior officials and congressional leaders to tell them what world leaders expect in terms of the United State's role.
Pasztor added that the UN Chief bases his confidence on the growing political momentum and commitment by world leaders including the numerous bilateral discussions that are moving the global climate negotiations forward.
