As part of the agreement, Qualcomm Incorporated will donate a base station worth a quarter of a million dollars to boost the capacity of the UN agency in a time of crisis. Emergency telecommunications play an important role in the immediate aftermath of disasters by ensuring the flow of information needed by government agents and humanitarians during rescue operations.
Sami Al Basheer, Director of ITU's Telecommunication Development Bureau, welcomed the alliance, noting the vital impact it will have on helping countries when disasters strike.
