- Experts in agriculture gathered in Geneva this week to participate in a meeting of the UN Conference on Trade and Development which focused on the food crisis in Africa. Habib Ouane, who deals with Africa and Least Developed Countries at UNCTAD, says more than half of the population of Africa is finding it difficult to have three meals per day.
Clinical trial of a drug to fight river blindness is launched in Africa
- A clinical trial of a drug that can eliminate river blindness is being launched in Liberia, Ghana and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Over 100 million people are at risk of infection with river blindness, the overwhelming majority of whom are in Africa.
Mobile clinic brings services to rural area of Zambia
- One of the 2009 United Nations Public Service Awards is a mobile community clinic in Zambia which is providing counselling, training and basic health services in a small rural district in the Kafue National Park. Dr. Mulenga Rosemary Kasoma, the Director of Itezhi District Health Office, which runs the clinic, talks to UN Radio about the project.
