The woman who made Times list of 100 Most Influential People, Suraya Pakzad of Afghanistan

Suraya Pakzad made the list of 100 most influential people in Times Magazine this year. She is the founder of the Voice for Women Organization and of its flagship project, the Women's Shelter in the city of Herat, Western Afghanistan. Dianne Penn of UN Radio asked her what it felt like to gain such worldwide recognition.




UN Radio talks to Indigenous Women attending a forum at the United Nations Headquarters

A large female delegation was present at the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City for two weeks in May. Although the assembled women came from an array of different cultural backgrounds from across continents, a dominant concern among many of them was the continued marginalization and discrimination they felt back in their home countries. UN Radio's Nick Baker has the story.


Hiroshima survivors talk about the influence of their Mothers in their lives

Shikego Sasamori and Kyoko Okayi are two childhood friends who survived the Hiroshima atomic bomb explosion. Shikego was wounded in the attack, but Kyoko bore the psychological trauma of seeing her friends and family suffer. They both agree their Mothers were key to their recovery.
