Abbas calls for an immediate cessation of Israeli aggression

06/01/2009
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called on the UN Security Council to take a first necessary step to save the people of Gaza.
He says there's a need for a resolution calling for an immediate cessation of Israeli aggression so that the voice of dialogue may rise.

Speaking through an interpreter, Mr. Abbas says any procrastination in ending the fighting and killing will only deepen the tragedy.

"Indeed, the entire world opinion will accept no less than an urgent intervention by the Security Council to stop the fire and deter the aggressor. This is the message I am bearing - a message I believe cannot be subject to any prevarication or delay, this urgent need to lay a firm foundation upon which we may build towards a holistic settlement to this destructive conflict."

President Abbas called for the creation of an international force for the protection of the Palestinians -one that would assist them in regaining their security and peace and end the unjust siege suffocating Gaza for so long.
