We are living in a time of increased threats and vulnerabilities: UN

01/07/2008
A stable economic environment is conducive to sustained development and the eradication of poverty and is key to building a more secure political climate.
That assessment can be found in the 2008 World Economic and Social Survey. The survey, titled "Overcoming Economic Insecurity", says we are living in a time of increased threats and vulnerabilities.

It was launched in Geneva Tuesday by Richard Kozul-Wright of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs:

"Globalization, market deregulation and rising inequality have been linked very intimately in many peoples' perceptions to a growing anxiety about the direction in which the world economy has been going. In many parts of the world, these threats are compounded by climate change, and catastrophic natural disasters and in some cases by civil conflicts and by out and out violence."

Mr. Kozul-Wright says the key message from the report is that while these problems have multiple causes, the fixation with the idea of self-regulating market and the notion that states and state-regulation are part of the problem rather than part of the solution have contributed to the growing sense of economic insecurity.

And he says a shift in policy emphasis is needed now with a stronger focus on productive investment.
