Secretary-General pays tribute to atomic bomb victims in Japan
On the first-ever visit by a United Nations Secretary-General to commemorate the nuclear attacks in Japan, Ban Ki-moon laid a wreath at the Hypocenter Monument in the city of Nagasaki, in honour of the victims of that 1945 United States bombing. Mr. Ban also traveled to Hiroshima, where he delivered a message of peace and a call to action to build a world free of nuclear weapons.
UN agencies step up aid after deadly flood in Pakistan
The numbers of people who have lost homes and livelihoods in the worst floods in generations to hit Pakistan has topped four million and is likely to rise further. The floods have killed more than 1,600 people. Manuel Bessler, the head of the UN agency coordinating humanitarian assistance in Pakistan, notes that with the monsoon season only half way through, the humanitarian crisis was likely to get worse before it got better.
Nam Theun 2 hydropower plant electrifies Laos and Thailand
Nam Theun 2 is a hydropower project located in the centre of Laos. The project will sell 95 percent of the energy it generates to Thailand. Revenues from the project will be used by the Lao government to invest in programs targeted to the country's poor.
