UNAMA is concerned about reports of civilian casualties in Afghanistan
The United Nations mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) is expressing deep concern about reports of civilian casualties in Rege, in Helmand Province on 23 July.
The concern follows a rocket attack by NATO-led troops on a target in the village last Friday.
UNAMA says it is essential that the current investigation by the International Security Assistance Forces and the Afghan Government is completed in a thorough, transparent and timely manner.
UN Spokesman Martin Nesirky says UNAMA is also calling for the findings of the investigation to be made public as soon as possible.
"Staffan de Mistura, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan, once again highlighted the need for all sides to meet their obligations to protect civilians. The UN Mission in Afghanistan emphasizes that all parties to an armed conflict have responsibilities under international law to protect civilians and minimize the impact of their actions on the civilian population and civilian objects - such as schools and hospitals."
Martin Nesirky says UNAMA's human rights office is gathering information on this matter.
