First-ever religious summit on AIDS set to start in The Netherlands
Religious and spiritual leaders from around the world are set to gather in The Netherlands on Monday for their first-ever summit on AIDS.
The two-day Summit of High Level Religious Leaders on the Response to HIV will bring together Baha'í, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh leaders.
The gathering will explore opportunities for religious leaders to speak out and take action in order to eliminate stigma and discrimination affecting people living with HIV.
Participants will address the realities of how stigma and discrimination are perpetuated both in religious communities and in society at large.
They will seek to build on best practices to strengthen the voice and action of religious leaders and bring about collaboration among different faiths with other sectors involved in the response to HIV.
They will be joined by the Executive Directors of the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Other participants in the meeting are the AIDS Ambassadors of The Netherlands and Sweden, leaders and representatives of networks of people living with HIV and other organizations active in the response to HIV.
