Tropical Storm Hubert made landfall on the east coast of Madagascar on Wednesday, flooding seven districts.

Six of those districts are not accessible because some portions of the roads are damaged.

The Malagasy Red Cross has reported 40 deaths and over 200 injuries. Close to 30,000 people expect various problems, including loss of their harvests.

The floods have damaged schools, local health centres and more than 3,000 houses.

The National Office for Disaster and Risk Management and humanitarian partners are mobilizing relief items, including shelter, food and non-food items, water sanitation and health kits, mosquito nets and medicine.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has already pre-positioned food in various places, and 2,000 persons affected have already been assisted with rations for three days.

WFP and its partners will also conduct a food security assessment and support recovery activities through food-for-work.

The agency will continue to support the affected population through its regular activities, with particular attention to orphans and persons affected by TB/HIV.
