UN Secretary-General on his way to Middle East

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is on his way the Middle East where he will meet with Israeli and Palestinian leaders in Ramalla and visit Gaza.

UN spokesman Martin Nesirky traveling with the Secretary-General says the United Nations chief took part in a substantive meeting of the Quartet in Moscow on Friday morning.

The meeting resulted in a very strong statement by the Quartet, comprising the European Union, the United Nations, Russia and the United States, which the Secretary-General read.

"The key point is it's balanced statement. The idea is to try to provide a bit of a push to the peace process in the Middle East supporting the need for this proximity talks to start as soon as possible and for those proximity talks to lead again as soon as possible to the direct talks."

The United Nations has expressed concern about the Israeli government's plan to build new housing units in Jerusalem as efforts are under way to restart the talks between Israelis and Palestinians.
