On International Women's Day, celebrated the world over on March 8th , Thoraya Obaid, head of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, praised women as the weavers of the fabric of society and contributors to the well-being of their families, communities and nations. Today, more girls are attending school, more women hold parliamentary and government seats and more women benefit from paid employment. But still, she says there is a long way to go to achieve true equality.

HIV/AIDS is a major public health concern

HIV/AIDS is a major public health concern and cause of death in Africa. The UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for AIDS in Africa, Elizabeth Mataka, says reducing transmission is a high priority. Speaking to UN Radio's Jocelyne Sambira, she explained how that can happen, beginning with ending newborns being infected by their mothers, or vertical transmission.

Among those attending the Committee on the Status of Women at UN headquarters recently were two African women who approached the task of pushing for women's rights in similar ways. Both Oby Nwankwo, the Executive Director of the Civil Resource Development and Documentation Center of Nigeria, and Tina Musuya, Director of the Center for Domestic Violence Prevention in Uganda, head organizations that want to stop violence against women, ensure their human rights and stop the spread of HIV in the community
