- The top United Nations envoy in Liberia says the situation in Liberia is calm and stable but fragile. Liberia is recovering from a devastating civil war that ended in 2003. The fragility of the situation manifested itself recently in ethnically-based violence with religious undertones in Voinjama town.
A refugee camp protects environment in Ethiopia
- In the past refugees and camps were often associated with the destruction of the environment, but there is a conservation project in a refugee camp in the western highlands of Ethiopia. The UN refugee agency says the results are positive in the camp in Sherkole where the main focus is wood conservation.
UN agencies combat sexual violence in DR Congo
- Women in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo suffer sexual violence where armed militias and soldiers are accused of
committing rape with impunity. The UN Population Fund and other agencies are working with the government to try to end this abomination.
