In the first meeting between the two since Mr. Gambari took up his duties the United Nation envoy briefed the Vice President on the activities of the UN Mission known as UNAMID.

He said these activities include the new priorities of providing more proactive support to the ongoing peace process and enhancing the security of civilians and internally displaced people in Darfur.

Mr. Gambari also spoke about laying the foundation for early recovery and assisting in the normalization of relations between Chad and the Sudan.

UNAMID says Vice President Taha fully endorsed these priorities and pledged the full support of the Sudanese government in assisting the mission to fulfill its mandate.

Mr. Gambari said he was "particularly happy" that this meeting took place before the signing ceremony of the Framework Agreement between the government and the Liberation and Justice Movement in Doha, Qatar.

The head of UNAMID is scheduled to depart for Doha Wednesday evening to attend the signing of the agreement.
