UNAMID helps train prison employees in Darfur
A five-day workshop to train prison employees and social workers is underway in Sudan in the town of El Fasher.
The project is part of efforts by the Rule of Law-Prison Advisory section of the UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) to help improve the penal system in the state.
Thirty participants from various penitentiaries in North Darfur will receive training in human rights approaches to basic prison duties including meeting international standards.
They will also be equipped with skills in the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners so that they can become law abiding citizens when they are released.
The workshop is being facilitated by UNAMID's offices dealing with human rights, gender, medical, child protection and HIV/AIDS issues.
UNAMID's Rule of Law Advisory section is collaborating with the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the North Darfur State Prison Authority in the project.
