WHO says much has been achieved in the health sector in Haiti

Two months after the earthquake struck Haiti, much has been achieved in providing medical assistance to the Caribbean country, according to the United Nations health agency.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that up to 300,000 children and adults have been vaccinated against infectious diseases, particularly measles, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus and whooping-cough.

WHO spokesman, Paul Garwood says that more than 300 organizations have been activated and are still working in Haiti under the coordination of the Health Cluster.

"We have seen the provision of hundreds of tons of medicines to public hospitals and mobile clinics from the main central drug store managed by WHO in Port-au-Prince. We have seen the monitoring of water quality at three major water distribution points take place. We see the donation of key medical equipment, including mobile X-ray machines to help in the diagnosis and treatment of people that have sustained serious injuries."

Paul Garwood points out, however, that there are still major gaps, particularly in the number of health care staff and training of health care workers.

He says there are still many hospitals that suffered structural damage, with almost half of Haiti's health facilities in and around Port-au-Prince having sustained damage.

Also, he adds, there are still not enough beds for patients who have undergone operations in Haiti.
