IOM supports emotional wellbeing of quake victims through entertainment

To help with the stress of losing loved ones, livelihoods and homes in January's earthquake, Haitians have been treated to a series of fun-filled ceremonies sponsored by IOM, the International Organization for Migration.

The ceremonies, in settlements throughout Port-au-Prince, feature local dance troops, the start of community conversations, and kite-making workshops.

IOM's Jean-Philippe Chauzy said an estimated 5,000 people were entertained by the mobile teams, which in addition to entertainers, included a psychologist and a social worker. Opening week activities included the "Vallée de Bourdon" camp, which can only be reached by foot, traveling down steep steps. The area was devastated by the earthquake and is currently home to 700 families living in tents and temporary shelters.

IOM's work is a creative approach to support the emotional wellbeing of Haitians through culture and craft.
