The government of Jamaica has made efforts to advance the status of women since the adoption of the Beijing Platform of Action 15 years ago and the Millennium Development Goals. The Executive Director of Jamaica's Bureau of Women's Affairs Ms. Faith Webster told the Commission on the Status of Women that although women have made significant strides in various sectors of society, it is recognized that there are areas which still need to be strengthened to allow women the ability to fully contribute to development equally with men. She pointed to violence against women and Legal Reform.

St. Lucia says it has moved aggressively to achieve empowerment and a better quality of life for its women

St. Lucia said that since the adoption of the Beijing Platform of Action, the country has moved in a decisive manner to realize the implementation of many of its goals and objectives in order to achieve empowerment and a better quality of life for our women. Deputy Ambassador Sarah Flood-Beaubrun told the Commission on the Status of Women that women have had many successes but continue to face challenges in realizing its full implementation.

With a simple click, U.S. travelers buying airline tickets via some travel agencies and Internet sites can now donate $2 or more to fight AIDS in developing countries. The United Nations and former President Bill Clinton launched the donation effort Thursday called MassiveGood. In a statement launching the programme, UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon noted that the 2015 deadline for achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals is fast approaching.

The UN holds a solemn memorial service to honor staff killed in the Haiti earthquake

UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon in remarks to a memorial ceremony in honor of the United Nations staff killed in the January 12th earthquake in Haiti. The secretary-general told an overflowing chamber packed with families of the deceased and staff members that "We remember 101 lives of consequence".

The UN Environment Programme-UNEP says Haiti is facing major environmental challenges following the Jan. 12 earthquake. UNEP's Programme Manager in Haiti Andrew Horton says before the earthquake Haiti was the most environmentally degraded country in the Caribbean.
