Heavy floods displace thousands in Kenya:OCHA
Heavy rains are causing rivers to overflow inundating several localities in North and West Kenya.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, OCHA, says that so far, 11 people have reportedly been killed in the floods, and an estimated 10,000 people displaced.
Humanitarian agencies are working around the clock distributing relief items to the affected communities.
But there is one area where the situation is most dramatic, says Elisabeth Byrs of OCHA.
"Manderra has been the hardest hit by the floods, where over 4,000 are now homeless, and 500 heads of cattle have drowned. Drinking water has been contaminated due to blockages in the distribution system, latrines are overflowing and worst of all the roads leading there are inaccessible."
Elisabeth Byrs notes that food prices will continue to rise because of the heavy rains, and it will be more difficult to replenish food stocks, which worries government officials and relief workers on the ground.
20 bridges have been damaged, roads are blocked, and evacuation measures are being put in place and sites identified in case the Government decides to open the dams if the water continues to rise.
More flooding is expected in the days to come.
