China overtakes Japan as the world's second largest industrial producer after the United States

China is now the world's second largest producer of manufacturing output, says a new report by UNIDO, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.  In fact, China has overtaken such major industrial economies as Germany, France, Italy and UK. And now it is second only to the United States. Shyam Upadhyaya, Chief Statistician of the Research and Statistics Branch of UNIDO, put all this into perspective.

UN commemorates lives of colleagues who perished in Haiti earthquake

Nearly two months ago, the Haiti earthquake demolished the UN mission's headquarters in the capital, Port au Prince. Among those who lost their lives were nine Asians who were working with MINUSTAH, the UN mission in Haiti - from China, He Zihong, Li Qin, Zhao Huayu and Zhong Jianqin; from the Philippines, Perlie Taub Panangui, Jerome Yap, Janice Dorado Arocena and Eustacio Cajucom Bermudez Jr; and from India, Satnam Singh. The UN held a solemn ceremony in New York to remember the lives of the victims from the UN family. Bissera Kostova prepared this report.
