WFP welcomes independent investigations into Somali operations

The World Food Programme (WFP) says it would welcome an independent investigation into its food assistance operations in Somalia.

This follows a report from the United Nations Monitoring Group on Somalia, which alleges that three transport contractors were involved in arms trading and had diverted food assistance away from the hungry.

In a press release on Thursday, WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran states that WFP is ready to fully cooperate with any independent inquiry into its work in Somalia.

She says the agency will review and investigate "each and every issue" raised by the report. WFP also would not engage in any new work with the three contractors in question.

The report by the UN Monitoring Group on Somalia is set to be presented to the Security Council next week.
