UN top cop is a woman
Swedish police officer Ann-Marie Orler is now the top UN police adviser. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced his selection on Monday, noting that the appointment coincides with International Women's Day.
Ms. Orler, who first came to the UN to serve as Deputy Police Adviser in 2008, has been Acting Police Adviser since last year. Just back from a trip to Haiti, she noted that the UN police and the Haitian National Police, the HNP have been collaborating to maintain security.
" So far the situation has been quite calm. There haven't been many riots or that kind of thing. There have been isolated incidents, but it's stable and it's calm. I was just there for two days but I did see the HNP patrolling on the streets. So I saw them, they were visible, which needs to be increased, of course. But they are visible. "
Hours after the earthquake struck in January, UN police rushed to the aid of the Haitian National Police who lost many of their own as a result of the earthquake. The UN Security Council has authorized an additional 1500 UN police in Haiti, most of whom have arrived already.
