Ms. Orler, who first came to the UN to serve as Deputy Police Adviser in 2008, has been Acting Police Adviser since last year. Just back from a trip to Haiti, she noted that the UN police and the Haitian National Police, the HNP have been collaborating to maintain security.

" So far the situation has been quite calm. There haven't been many riots or that kind of thing. There have been isolated incidents, but it's stable and it's calm. I was just there for two days but I did see the HNP patrolling on the streets. So I saw them, they were visible, which needs to be increased, of course. But they are visible. "

Hours after the earthquake struck in January, UN police rushed to the aid of the Haitian National Police who lost many of their own as a result of the earthquake. The UN Security Council has authorized an additional 1500 UN police in Haiti, most of whom have arrived already.
