Gender equality and women's empowerment are fundamental to the global mission of the United Nations to achieve equal rights and dignity for all, says United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

In his message on International Women's Day, the Secretary-General says gender equality is a matter of basic human rights, as enshrined in the United Nations founding Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

He says equality for women and girls is not only part of the United Nations identity but is also an economic and social imperative.

He warns that until women and girls are liberated from poverty and injustice, the United Nations goals of peace, security and sustainable development are in jeopardy.

The Secretary-General recalls that fifteen years ago at the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing, China, governments pledged to advance equality, development and peace for all women everywhere.

The landmark Beijing Declaration has had a deep and wide-ranging impact, guided policy making, inspired new national laws and sent a clear message to women and girls around the world that equality and opportunity are their inalienable rights.

The Secretary-General points out that there are many examples of progress, thanks in large part to the resolute efforts of civil society organizations.

He notes that most girls now receive an education, particularly at primary level, and women are now more likely to run businesses or participate in government.

On this International Women's Day, the Secretary-General is calling for a critical look at the achievements of the past 15 years in order to build on what has worked, and correct what has not.

He calls for working with renewed determination for a future of equal rights, equal opportunities and progress for all.
