Timor Leste forges ahead with economic development
Timor Leste is making efforts to improve its economic performance, according to the country's Deputy Prime Minister Jose Luis Guterres.
Speaking in the Security Council on Tuesday, Mr. Guterres said despite the current world economic and financial crises, Timor Leste's economic growth of non-oil gross domestic product in 2008 was over 12 per cent.
He added that preliminary estimates of economic growth for 2009 are around 12 per cent while the annual average inflation is less than 2 per cent.
"The agriculture sector substantially increased its productivity by introducing high yielding and hybrid variety of crops and by improving irrigation systems. The Ministry of Finance improved the system of Public Finance and Management and the budget execution (and) at the same time remained steadfast on the path of fiscal prudence and discipline."
Deputy Prime Minister Guterres said the government is committed to maintaining the growth of non-oil gross domestic product for years to come.
He said it will invest in rural areas, human resources and basic infrastructure in order to reduce poverty and unemployment.
