The UN launches a revised appeal for nearly $1.5 billion for Haiti

The United Nations has appealed for $1.4 billion in humanitarian and early recovery assistance for Haiti over the coming year. But in making the appeal, UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon noted that since the figure includes more than $600 million already raised under the current Flash Appeal launched in January to cover a six-month period, the unmet need being requested in this latest appeal amounts to just under $770 million.

FAO expresses concern at the lack of international support to Haiti's agricultural sector

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization -FAO has lamented the lack of international support for the rehabilitation of agriculture in Haiti. FAO chief Jacques Diouf told a press conference in Rome that FAO is working with IFAD- the International Fund for Agricultural Development and WFP- the World Food Programme in the framework of a tripartite task force. This he adds is for the preparation of a medium and long-term action plan and the implementation of food security related projects.

The International Atomic Energy Agency sends a total of eight X-ray machines as emergency medical relief to Haiti

Eight mobile X-Ray Units, purchased by the International Atomic Energy Agency -IAEA, are now in Haiti as emergency medical relief for those injured in the earthquake that devastated the country more than a month ago. The three digital and five analogue X-Ray machines will be used by doctors diagnosing and treating injuries. An estimated 250 000 injured require care, with the country´s radiography capabilities crippled. Juan Antonio Casas-Zamora is the Director of IAEA's Division for Latin America, Technical Cooperation.

Cuban health professionals are "absolutely" important for Haiti. That's what the representative of the World Health Organization in Haiti says. Dr. Henriette Chamouillet, who briefed reporters in Geneva on the health challenges in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti, notes that Cuba has pledged to send as many doctors as it possibly it can if asked to do so.
