The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Yukiya Amano has noted with concern Iran's intention to enrich uranium to nearly 20%.

The IAEA was informed of this in a letter from the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran on Monday. The letter says the enriched uranium will be produced at the Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant at Natanz to serve as fuel for the Tehran Research Reactor.

In a statement by his spokesperson, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said this decision may affect, in particular, ongoing international efforts to ensure the availability of nuclear fuel for the Tehran Research Reactor.

The agreement on fuel for the Tehran site was put forward last October during talks at the agency's Vienna headquarters. Iran said it needs more time to provide a response, while the other three parties to the talks - France, Russia and the United States - have all indicated their approval of the agreement.

The Director General reiterated the Agency's readiness to play an intermediary role on the issue of the Tehran Research Reactor.
