In a report to be launched in New York next week, UNESCO says teachers, students and school buildings are increasingly coming under attack by armed groups soldiers and security forces.

The report, entitled "Education under Attack 2010" refers to incidents occurring in 32 United Nations Member States.

It says students have been maimed on their way to school, recruited to become child soldiers or suicide bombers, their teachers and academics tortured or killed and their centres of learning totally destroyed.

The study analyses the motives behind these attacks and the impact they have not only on education and learning, but also on the social, economic and political development of a country.

It also examines measures needed to strengthen protection and prevention and to end impunity for perpetrators of such attacks.
