UN mission in Cote d'Ivoire calls for calm as voters register for March poll
The United Nations Mission in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) has called for calm in the country as the final voters list is being prepared for elections in March.
In a statement issued in Abijan on Thursday, UNOCI deplores recent violent incidents in the towns of Katiola and Divo in the western part of the country.
It says the incidents appear to be connected to tensions around the registration of voters for the presidential election which has been postponed repeatedly since 2005.
The head of UNOCI recently reported to the Security Council that there are now just over five million voters confirmed and a million others awaiting confirmation.
A problem emerged when the Independent Electoral Commission cross-checked a list of one million non-traced people and could only trace 429,000.
The UN mission in Cote d'Ivoire urges all the parties to work to resolve the issues related to the voters list and to exercise restraint to preserve and consolidate the achievements made so far in the electoral process
