Secretary-General appoints Bill Clinton to coordinate efforts in Haiti
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has asked former United States President Bill Clinton to lead the coordination of international aid from emergency response to reconstruction in Haiti.
The Secretary-General met with President Clinton on Wednesday to discuss Haiti and his role as the United Nations Special Envoy for Haiti.
The Secretary-General said that this would require extraordinary leadership and he couldn't think of a better leader than President Bill Clinton:
"I hope you will work as spokesperson for all this international aid effort and a leader in providing strategic guidance to the United Nations involvement at international level."
President Clinton pledged to do the best he could, adding that the challenges are great and there are many urgent problems to deal with in Haiti.
"So the trick is to get the Haitian people back where they can stop living from day to day, and start living from week to week or month to month and then start the long-term efforts."
Former President Clinton said the leader of Haiti wants to build a functioning modern state for the first time and he will do whatever he can to work with all the agencies of the UN to help achieve that.
