UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says Haiti needs every bit of help it can get
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Haiti will need every ounce of help the UN can offer. He said the UN would continuously work with the international Member States to overcome this crisis as soon as possible and bring humanitarian assistance as soon as possible and try to save as many lives as possible.
St. Lucia hails the swift response of the international community to help Haiti
St. Lucia, speaking on behalf of the Caribbean Community-CARICOM- of which Haiti is a member, expressed concern over preliminary reports by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) of significant loss of life, damage to infrastructure including water, electricity and telephone services, and the reported heavy damage to two hospitals in Port-au-Prince. St. Lucia's deputy Permanent Representative is Sarah Flood-Beaubrun.
Guyana expresses shock at the widespread destruction
Charge d'affaires George Talbot said Guyana was also touched by the loss of life by the people of Haiti and of the personnel of the United Nations who had worked assiduously to help Haitians address the challenges of development and peace in their country. George Talbot said the Guyana Government convened a meeting with representatives of political parties and non-governmental organizations to coordinate a national response to aid in the recovery effort.
Grenada expresses solidarity with the people of Haiti
Grenada, speaking on behalf of the Alliance of Small island States - a 43 member grouping of states from the Pacific and Indian Oceans and the Caribbean, expressed solidarity with the people of Haiti and the thousands of families worldwide who have loved ones working with the United Nations in Haiti. Ambassador Dessima Williams said she was aware that within the Caribbean and other parts of the AOSIS world, relief efforts were already in full gear.
Jamaica says it is saddened by the wide scale human tragedy
Jamaica's representative Ambassador Raymond Wolfe noted that Haiti was Jamaica's closest neighbor to the east, and that Jamaicans were therefore profoundly saddened at the wide scale human tragedy caused by the catastrophic earthquake. Ambassador Wolfe said Caricom stands as one in solidarity with Haiti and expressed the hope that beyond this crisis that Haiti's medium to long- term socio-economic needs will also be addressed.
