Police officer probed for shooting is suspended in Timor Leste

The United Nations Mission in Timor Leste (UNMIT) announced on Monday that a police officer under investigation for last week's deadly shooting incident has been suspended from duty.

UNMIT says the incident occurred in the evening of Monday last week when members of the National Police and UN Police arrived at a scene in the Comoro area of the capital, Dili, and called for backup.

A detachment of the National Police responded to the situation, in which one person was killed and another injured by gunshots allegedly fired by a National Police officer.

UNMIT says it suspended the police officer effective 2 January due to the gravity of the alleged misconduct and in order to allow an objective disciplinary inquiry.

The UN mission called on all the people of Timor Leste to remain calm following the incident as the police complete their investigation.

UNMIT says its Human Rights and Transitional Justice Unit will conduct a separate inquiry into the incident.

The United Nations is handing over responsibilities to Timor Leste as part of the gradual transfer of the security functions it assumed in 2006 after violence erupted in the newly independent country.
