Greening the UN one tree at a time

The Spokesperson for the Secretary-General revealed future plans to suspend the distribution of printed copies at United Nations headquarters in New York starting with the New Year.

This is a giant leap towards fulfilling the Secretary-General's commitment to make the Organization's in-house practices and procedures environmentally friendly and sustainable.

This move will save tons of paper with 8,000 copies of the United Nations Journal currently printed every night.

These documents will however be available in electronic versions on the United Nations website.

UN offices worldwide have instituted a number of initiatives to contribute towards a wider campaign of "greening the UN".

The Headquarters complex is also undergoing a historic renovation to cut energy consumption by half.
