WHO to distribute much needed H1N1 vaccine to developing countries

Azerbaijan and Mongolia will receive the first shipments of the H1N1 vaccine next week, according to the World Health Organization's Gregory Hartl.

As he explains, vulnerability and readiness determine which countries get the donated vaccine first:

"Obviously a country which is currently in its winter and the height of the flu season would be more vulnerable than a country in the southern hemisphere which is currently in its summer. And readiness refers to the fact that a country has to have a distribution plan in place and approved with WHO".

In addition, in order to receive the vaccine, countries should make a request and agree to certain conditions.  One hundred eighty million doses need to be dispatched to countries that otherwise would not have access.  WHO's focus is to help countries get the pledged vaccines as soon as possible.
