China: the thousand mile journey to end climate change starts with one step

Chinese Prime Minister, Wen Jiabao, urged global leaders in Copenhagen on Friday to give people hope by taking credible actions.

Wen Jiabao understands a long term perspective is needed to tackle climate change, but believes it is important for the world to focus on what can be done in the present.

The Kyoto Protocol clearly sets out the emission reduction targets for developed countries by 2012 but so far, he says, these countries have increased rather than decreased their emissions. And they have fallen short of expectations regarding the mid-term reductions.

What is important, he adds, is to honor commitments already made and take real action.

As for China, says Jiabao, reducing emissions on such a large scale and over such an extended period of time will require tremendous efforts on its part. However, this target will be incorporated in China's mid and long term plan.

The Prime Minister also promised the country would enhance its monitoring and evaluation methods as well as engage in international exchange, and dialogue.
