Despite the cold, demonstrators get fired up outside the Bella Centre in Copenhagen
With just two days left to conclude a binding climate agreement, tensions are rising both inside and, more so, outside the Bella Centre.
Demonstrators chanted and protested, Wednesday, as heads of state and government arrived at the Bella Centre here in Copenhagen to address the Climate summit. More than a hundred protesters were arrested as they headed for the Centre, leading police to close the train station closest to the Centre. Many delegates and staff were stuck outside the Centre for up to three hours. This reporter was among the more fortunate who had to walk the last mile to the centre, where I met some non-governmental organizations who were allowed to set up shop just outside the gates.
BOBB: As we arrive at the Bella Centre, just before we clear security, you've got lots of folks from various NGO's and civil organizations are demonstrating and telling their message, and we have Green Peace giving out coffee in the very cold morning. What is Green Peace's message?
MEV: Green Peace's message right now is that as always, we are only looking for actions and not words. We need a binding agreement here. We've had two years to prepare for it and we need it right now. Today, we are getting thrown out of the UN security Zone.
He's called Mev and he describes himself as Swedish-American.
Inside the Bella Centre, delegates from more than 190 nations are working to come up with a binding climate agreement by Friday.
