Iraq adopts election law
Iraq's Council of Representatives has finalized the country's election law, paving the way to hold parliamentary polls next February.
Ad Melkert, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq, said the UN mission (UNAMI) has worked with members of the Council over the past few weeks to come to a broad agreement on outstanding issues.
The election law expands the number of seats in Parliament, allotting some to Iraq's 18 provinces and the remaining seats to religious minorities and blocs that garnered national support but did not win seats in individual provinces.
Mr. Melkert reaffirmed that the UN stands ready to assist the Independent High Electoral Commission to hold elections at the end of February.
