In his message for the day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says the recent "Seal the Deal" and "Volunteering for our Planet" campaigns are just the latest examples of how volunteers are helping to shape our world.

The head of the UN Environment Programme, Achim Steiner, says this year's International Volunteer Day, which falls just two days before the Copenhagen climate conference aims to show how much people care about the outcome of that summit.

"Just in the last two months since volunteeringfortheplanet.org has been put on the Internet, we have had commitments of over 700,000 hours of voluntary time that people have committed across the world to issue of our planet and climate change."

You can also get to the volunteering for our planet web site through sealthedeal2009.org.
