CARICOM remains ardent proponents of a more effective and efficient UN development system

Ban Ki-moon"CARICOM underscores the importance of ensuring the provision of adequate funding for operational activities for development."  That's what Ambassador Delano Bart of St. Kitts-Nevis told the General Assembly'ss committee dealing with economic and social affairs. Speaking on behalf of CARICOM, Ambassador Bart pointed to a recent General Assembly resolution on system-wide coherence which noted that strengthening of the governance of opertational activities for development should focus on enhancing existing intergovernmental bodies.

The Bahamas says the impacts of the financial and economic crisis continue to grow in severity


Ambassador Paula Bethel of the Bahamas, speaking on behalf of CARICOM, said the region attaches high priority to the follow-up to and implementation of the Monterey Consensus and Doha Declaration on Financing for Development. The Bahamian representative to the United Nations pointed to the Secretary-General's report which provides direction on how best to approach the question of follow-up and implementation.

Jamaica says it supports the principles of religious freedoms and explains its abstention on the vote


By a recorded vote of 81 in favor to 55 against with 43 abstentions, the General Assembly in a draft resolution said it would strongly deplore all acts of psychological and physical violence and assaults against persons on the basis of religion or belief. Among those abstaining was Jamaica which explained its opposition to the resolution.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon says an agreement on climate change is within reach


Addressing the Commonwealth Heads of Government in Port of Spain, Trinidad last weekend, the Secretary-General said some 80 world leaders have now pledged to attend the Summit and more are signing up daily.  He said the momentum is strong and continues to grow, adding that the common goal is to achieve a firm foundation for a legally binding climate treaty as early as possible in 2010.
