Google and UNESCO team up to offer virtual visits to World Heritage sites
The UN cultural agency, UNESCO has formed an alliance with the Internet giant Google to provide virtual visits to sites inscribed on the World Heritage List.
These are places of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity.
19 sites in Europe, including the Palace of Versailles in France and the historic centre of Prague in the Czech Republic are being offered through Google's Street View interface, which provides a more three-dimensional experience to viewers. The rest of the 890 sites will be shown on the Google Earth and Google Maps interfaces.
At UNESCO's suggestion, Google will soon be visiting and photographing other sites on the List, including some in South Africa, Brazil, Canada and Mexico. The focus is on harder-to-access sites.
