New chief of UN nuclear watchdog starts his work
The new Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, (IAEA) took up his duties on Tuesday.
Yukiya Amano, an experienced Japanese diplomat, was appointed for a four-year term by the agency's Board of Governors in July this year. He succeeds Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei in the position.
In a short encounter with reporters in Vienna, the new chief of the United Nations nuclear watchdog agency said the situation surrounding the IAEA is stormy.
"We have a lot of difficult challenges, but I would like to do my best. I would like to address the global issues that include non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, enhancing nuclear security, addressing the energy need, providing good health care, and water management, among others."
Yukiya Amano, the fifth leader of the IAEA since its founding in 1957, said he will try to be an impartial, reliable and professional Director General of the UN nuclear agency.
He has worked extensively on IAEA-related, disarmament, non-proliferation and nuclear energy issues for over 30 years.
