On World AIDS Day UN calls for end to discriminatory laws

World AIDS Day this year is being marked under the theme "universal access and human rights".

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé says it is an occasion for both hope and concern.

"Significant progress has been made towards universal access. New HIV infections have dropped. Fewer children are born with HIV. And more than four million people are on treatment."

At the same time, Mr. Sidibe says, 28 years into the epidemic, stigma and discrimination towards people living with AIDS continue to undermine efforts towards prevention and treatment.

In his message for the day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urges countries to remove punitive laws, policies and practices that hamper the AIDS response, including travel restrictions against people living with HIV.
