Security Council hears report on continued insecurity in Darfur
The UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Edmond Mulet, told the Security Council on Monday that the security situation in Darfur remains unstable, with continued car-jackings and attacks on humanitarian workers.
He also warned that the UN-African Union Mission, UNAMID, has been facing serious challenges with regard to its freedom of movement and expressed concern about the fate of two UNAMID staff kidnapped more than three months ago.
Mr. Mulet added that the Sudanese know what they have to do in order to address several key issues of the peace-process:
Mulet: "Power-sharing, wealth-sharing, security, compensation. Considerable progress needs to be made on these issues in the coming months in order for the elections to be meaningful in Darfur. If progress is not made, the holding of elections could have significant implications for peace."
The Security Council, in a statement read by its President, called on all parties in the Darfur conflict to commit to finding a peaceful way forward and condemned the attacks on peacekeepers and humanitarian workers.
