IAEA Board of Governors censures Iran for building uranium enrichment facility

The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency has passed a resolution criticizing Iran for secretly constructing a nuclear fuel enrichment facility at Qom, in breach of its obligations to suspend all enrichment related activities.

The resolution adopted on Friday with 25 votes by the 35-member Board was endorsed by all five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

It demands that Iran immediately suspend construction at Qom and disclose any decisions on constructing other nuclear facilities. It also asks Iran to clarify the purpose of the uranium enrichment plant at Qom, which was visited by IAEA inspectors after its existence was acknowledged by Iran in September.

The resolution comes a day after IAEA Director-General, Mohammed ElBaradei, told the Board that the agency has reached a 'dead end' with Iran in trying to verify that Iran's nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes, as it claims.
