Start of 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women

Sixteen Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women started around the world on Wednesday to bring greater attention to this pervasive problem.

Stopping violence against women

Stopping violence against women

The campaign starts on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and will end on Human Rights Day on December 10.

Activists around the word are calling for greater efforts to prevent violence against women, to press for legal and judicial reform and to use international human rights instruments to address the issue.

For his part, United Nations Secretary-General Ban-Ki moon has launched a Network of Men Leaders dedicated to addressing this problem.

"This Network will consist of men, young and old, who have pledged to work to end violence against women and girls. These men will add their voices to the growing global chorus for action. Each has pledged to take concrete steps in his community of influence and create partnerships with women to end this violence."

The Secretary-General stresses that violence against women and girls will not be eradicated until men and boys refuse to tolerate it.

He commits himself to doing everything in his power to ensure the success of this fight.
