Secretary-General is saddened by violence in Southern Philippines
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is saddened by reports of the brutal killing of more than 40 civilians in Maguindanao province in Southern Philippines.
There are reports that the victims were killed as they were traveling to file nomination papers for elections next May.
According to the reports, they were shot at close range, some in their vehicles and others while they were fleeing the attackers.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Secretary-General condemns "this heinous crime committed in the context of a local election campaign."
He extends heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and said he hoped that no effort would be spared to bring justice and to hold the perpetrators accountable.
