Registration of 5,000 former combatants starts in Darfur
Monday was the start of a 3-day demobilization process in Sudan's troubled Darfur region. Some four hundred ex-combatants are expected to register to be demobilized and eventually reintegrated into their communities during this initial phase being conducted in El Fasher.
The exercise is being conducted by North Sudan Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Commission, assisted by the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur, UNAMID.
The representative of SLA Free Will Movement, Mohi al Dein Idris, appealed to other Movements who are still fighting to move the peace process forward by demobilizing their soldiers.
"We went to send a message to the international community to help us in the demobilization process, and to our brothers who did not sign the peace agreement to start looking for peace and to see for themselves that we are now reintegrating our personnel into civil society and they are going to serve Darfur as well as Sudan."
Once they register, the ex combatants are issued with identity cards and a cash payment of about $150. They are also given food vouchers and other basic amenities, and undergo a medical exam.
