Greenhouse gases reach highest level since pre-industrial time: WMO

Levels of most greenhouse gases continue to increase, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Greenouse Gas Bulletin, for 2008 published on Monday.

WMO Greenhouse Gas Bulletin

WMO Greenhouse Gas Bulletin

The bulletin says global concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, which are the main greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, have reached the highest levels recorded since pre-industrial times.

Since 1990, the overall increase caused by all long-lived greenhouse gases is 26%.

WMO notes that human activities, such as fossil fuel burning and agriculture, are the main emitters of greenhouse gases which scientists widely recognize as drivers of global warming and climate change.

This year's Greenhouse Gas Bulletin precedes the world conference on climate change scheduled to take place in Copenhagen, Denmark from 7 to 18 December.
