UN celebrates 20 years of the Child Rights Convention
Children should remain a global priority, even in times of multiple crises.
That is the message from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, speaking at a ceremony in New York on Friday commemorating the 20th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
"Children must be at the heart of our thinking on climate change, on the food crisis, and on the other challenges we are addressing on a daily basis. We know what to do and we know how to do it. Even during the most severe economic crisis in decades, the means are at hand."
The landmark Convention recognized for the first time that children have human rights. And Mr. Ban described it as a beacon, template and guide over the past two decades.
However, he points out that realizing the rights in the Convention remains a huge challenge as millions of children still die before their fifth birthday, or lack access to clean food, water and education.
