UN group facilitates strategy sharing on ageing for European countries
The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is assisting that region with one of the biggest challenges of this century: population ageing.
UNECE has drafted policy briefs outlining good practices and strategies from across Europe in four areas related to ageing, including gender equality, work, and the integration of older persons into society.
Andre Vitak, who is Chief of the Population Unit at the Commission, says the aim is to insure that older people are active participants in economic, social and cultural life.
" Volunteering has proven to be a good way to enhance the integration of older persons, and it should involve both volunteering for, and volunteering by, older persons to allow all generations to receive assistance and to use their experiences and skills to help others. "
The Commission's Working Group on Ageing will meet next week to discuss the strategies.
